We’ve been told that, apparently, batting one’s eyelashes is an effective means of seducing a man. In cheesy romance novels the heroine’s rival bats her eyelashes at the hero, wantonly inviting him on. I think it was the fifties that put this idea about – it seems to have been a thoroughly repressed time. Because correct me if I am wrong, but does batting one’s eyelashes not consist of merely blinking with some force? Or are there other components to it? Because that sounds far from persuasive as a measure of seduction. If anything, the gentleman will become alarmed and convey the lady to an ophthalmologist, fearing cataract formation.
