They’ve told me that one of the best ways to find a job is to befriend your professors. Feeling more desperate than usual today, I decided to do so. Since we had a guest speaker a bunch of people from our class had coffee with him in the cafeteria and I found myself sitting next to my professor, a shy funny Nigerian man. I talked and talked. I gesticulate a lot – so much in fact that I dislodged one of my large noisy earrings which landed on the table with a tinkle. I was really embarrassed, but managed to act casual while inserting it back in. Apparently, he was even more mortified: he muttered “Sorry,” as he averted his eyes. What was he sorry for?
